 PRESS RELEASE

“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though chequered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much or suffer much, because they lie in the grey light that knows not victory nor defeat” –  Arthur Erickson.

STATE OF THE UNION

Blessed be the name of God who has given us the grace to be in existence, and to come up with this OOUSUG press release in this administration. The inability of the OOUSUG to issue a press release since the inception of this administration is predicated on the simple reason of paucity or lack of funds. But it is not to say that we won’t accept any blames on this issue because as leaders we are bound to do so. We accept full responsibility for all our actions and in-actions. Albeit, this latest edition is aimed at fulfilling the information needs of OOUITES on the happenings and events in all campuses.

The present OOUSUG administration under comrade Oyeyiola Joel (OBAMA) leadership is set to birth a new OOU which will be competing with foreign universities by organizing different life changing programmes, sports festival, social entertainments, good welfare packages, etc that will bridge the lacuna between students and the union.

Renovation of union building

A landmark achievement by this regime is the total renovation and face-lift of the union building aka Olorogun Kuku Secretariat. Hitherto, the union building that used to be a place of total abhorrence for OOUITES because of its almost dilapidated state is now a building befitting of seasoned students unionist with adequate rooms for serious official duties. We urge oouites to constantly visit the SU building for all issues affecting them.

STATE OF THE CAMPUS

To start with, when we came on board we noticed a lot of irregularities that needed prompt attention, myriad of problems that plagued the system.

On Tuition Fees

When this regime came on board on July 6, 2011 we promised to lobby and put pressure on the appropriate authorities to ensure downward reduction in tuition fees.  What was on ground then can be akin to unfair arrangement. During the 2009/2010 session, the management has successfully put in place modalities to increase tuition fees at all levels, but because of the stand of the SUG then, they only succeeded in increasing the fresher’s fees while the stalite was made to pay same amount they paid in previous session.

Again, the then governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel as a result of the increment announced 50% cut on the eve of his last days in office. The moment the new government headed by Senator Ibikunle Amosun came on board, the SUG in conjunction with NANS JCC Ogun State started lobbying, writing series of letters and putting pressure on the government to further reduce the tuition fees. On the long-run, he bowed to pressure by announcing another 10% reduction after he has agreed to respect the previous pronouncement made by his predecessor altogether we now have 60% reduction.

N.B: We must understand that since the stallite did not paid higher during the time the fresher’s fees was increased, only  10% cut will be enjoyed by stallite while the fresher’s will enjoy 60% cut. This is because during the 2009/2010 session only the fresher’s fees was finally increased while the stallite paid same amount they paid in the previous session. We are equally putting further pressure on government to do more in this regards.

Transportation

On the sacrosanct issue of transportation. No doubt, we’ve being experiencing poor transportation system from time immemorial. This administration promise to subdue and ameliorate the problems by negotiating with some bodies and stakeholders on partnering with the union by bringing functional buses to our school. In a bid to surmount Inter-transportation problem, we have succeeded in partnering with a body that have provided (OOUITES with) eight functioning brand new buses, situated at Berger Oke, Lagos. The park in Lagos is tagged ‘Subsidy Park’ for proper visibility. For booking, hiring, you can call Kunle on: 08057213188.  Please note that we are still working earnestly to further ameliorate the intra transportation problem by following this same suit.

Also, we urge OOUITES to bear the sudden increase in transportation fare by the ASCODO, the sole reason is traceable to the cinch reason of increase in fuel price by the Federal Government.

Security

The only security that a man can have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience and ability. In the light of the above, the security of Ago-Iwoye and its environs is nothing to write home about. While we are not trying to sound immodest, it is imperative that the SUG has taken giant strides to stem the tide of insecurity on our campuses. Incessant cases of gunshots have been drastically reduced on our campuses and important stakeholders are always consulted time to time to forestall any occurrence of security breach on our campuses. Hence, it is noteworthy on part of the current leadership that there is no single occurrence of gunshot either in mini campus or permanent site except the unfortunate incident of armed robbers attack that claims some lives. We pray for the soul of the deceased to rest in peace.

Off recent, the public relations student in conjunction with SUG carried out a project tagged ‘SAVE THE WALL’ which was aimed at bringing back decency and the beauty of our school wall. Hence, the union is using this medium to notify all class governors, intending aspirants, advertisers and all concerned quarters to desist from the act of defacing the wall with posters, bills and any ludicrous information on the walls on our campuses as there are heavy penalty for such barbaric act. The university will not hesitate to punish any students caught in such act.

It is noteworthy to mention the pertinent issue of our sister university of education the Tai Solarin University of Education. While we appreciate the intention of the Government to revamp educational sector in Ogun state, it is equally out of place to treat some of our revered institution (especially educational institution) with disdain. The proper and adequate consultation among the stakeholders will have gone a long way before their decision that has generated unwarranted debate in the state was taken.

It will be injustice not to salute the gallant comradeship of the entire students of TASUED and particularly comrade humble. T. J, who lost his life in the struggle.

It is on this solidarity note that OOUSUG is saying aluta continua Victoria ascerta.

 STATE OF THE NATION

No doubt, a whole range of issues has occurred across the length and breadth of this country. Of course, insecurity in this country has reached an all-time high, the dangerous Boko Haram sect has never threatened the peace and stability of this country more than this times.

We hereby call on the necessary security agencies to rise up to the situation and to meet the ever demanding sophistication of the sect. We commend SSS for doing a grate job in arresting the insurgency and we urge that the SSS should sustain the tempo.

OUR POSITIONS:

–  The management of OOU should ensure prompt release of result at various departments as at when due to arrest delay in NYSC.

–  The health Centres within the University must be well founded and ameliorated.

–  The school libraries must be well equipped for proper academic upliftment.

–  A functioning and effective Issuance scheme is what we want.

–  The Ogun State Government and management should provide us with functional buses to ease our transportation problem.

–  The management should re-open the portal for students to complete their 010/011 session.

Shun cultism, Shun nudity and shun examination malpractices. Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta…
